This was a book filled with darkened lanes where the suspense was hidden in the shadows, ready to pounce when least expected. Author Simon Lelic wrote a book on friendship, quite a twisted one at that, which made it all exciting, especially in the last 30%
his book, at least in terms of its narrative structure, is akin to a number of other novels in which a group of young people search for a missing person. By far the finest of these is Jane Harper’s ‘Force of Nature’, part of her impressive ‘The Dry’ trilogy. Simon Lelic’s characters have neither the interest nor the depth of individuality that Harper’s have.
Five High School students decide to attempt a rather ill-considered search for their missing friend Sadie, with whom some of the party have strong connections. The narrative is carried forward by alternating between the individuals of the search party and the more formal activities of the police investigating the case: Detective Inspector Fleet and his sergeant Nicky.
The students’ contributions are in the form of a loose stream of consciousness style, which does not help to discriminate them. The two girls, seem to me to be all too similar. The students: Abi, Cora, Fash, Luke and Mason, predictably find themselves in all manner of disputes and tensions as the terrain and their unfamiliarity in living ‘in the wild’ come home to them. Their different feelings towards the missing girl underlie a series of flame-ups.
In my second book by the author, I spent the first two-thirds of the book wondering whom to believe. The woods added to the atmosphere of the book as the darkness and lack of food and water made the teens wary. Their masks fell away in the face of their fear. And all that remained was the blatant truth which they no longer could escape from.
